A 77 mm UV filter is a transparent (or nearly transparent) piece of optical glass that screws onto the front of a Canon lens with a 77 mm filter thread. While originally designed to block ultraviolet light (which can introduce haze on film), its modern use is mostly protective: it safeguards your lens’ front element from dust, scratches, fingerprints, and moisture. Good UV filters are made with multi-coated (MC) glass to minimize any impact on image quality. When used correctly, a high-quality UV filter can stay on your lens permanently without noticeably affecting contrast or sharpness. It’s especially useful when working in challenging environments (beach, windy streets, sandy terrain) — replacing a scratched filter is often cheaper than repairing or replacing a lens.
